Title: The Development of an Active Mathematics Learning Model
Through a Problem-Solving Process to Enhance Mathematical Problem-Solving Ability in Elementary Number Theory for Grade 10 Students
Researcher: Tanongkiat Polnchaiya
Academic Year: 2026
Abstract
This research aimed to: (1) investigate the problems and guidelines for mathematics learning; (2) develop an active mathematics learning model through a problem-solving process; (3) compare students’ mathematical problem-solving ability before and after learning through the developed model; (4) compare students’ mathematics learning achievement before and after learning through the developed model; and (5) examine students’ satisfaction with the developed model. The sample consisted of 24 Grade 10 students from Class 4/3 at Princess Chulabhorn Science High School Loei in the 2026 academic year, selected using cluster random sampling. The research instruments consisted of: (1) an active mathematics learning model through a problem-solving process; (2) lesson plans; (3) a mathematical problem-solving ability test; (4) a mathematics achievement test; and (5) a student satisfaction questionnaire. The data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and a paired-samples t-test.
The research findings were as follows:
1. The problems in mathematics learning were classified into three aspects: (1) learning structure and context, in which time constraints affected the continuity of developing higher-order thinking and systematic problem-solving processes; (2) instructional practices, in which some teachers still relied on lecture-based instruction and lacked a model that systematically integrated active learning with a problem-solving process; and (3) learners, who were unable to systematically carry out the problem-solving process and lacked abilities in analysis, planning, and logical reasoning. These findings indicated the need to develop an active mathematics learning model that systematically integrates a problem-solving process to effectively enhance students’ mathematical problem-solving ability.
2. The developed active mathematics learning model through a problem-solving process, referred to as the PREVE Model, for enhancing mathematical problem-solving ability in elementary number theory for Grade 10 students consisted of four components: (1) principles, (2) objectives, (3) learning procedures, and (4) measurement and evaluation. The learning procedures comprised five stages: (1) Problem Engagement, (2) Reasoning and Planning, (3) Experience, (4) Verification through Exchange, and (5) Extension. The efficiency of the model was 81.81/81.67, which met the established criterion of 80/80.
3. The students who learned through the PREVE Model had significantly higher mathematical problem-solving ability after learning than before learning at the .05 level.
4. The students who learned through the PREVE Model had significantly higher mathematics learning achievement after learning than before learning at the .05 level.
5. The students’ satisfaction with learning through the PREVE Model was at a high level, with a mean score of 4.32 and a standard deviation of 0.60
